Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) is an innovative, noninvasive treatment for depression, anxious depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and smoking addiction. Using BrainsWay's H-Coil technology, it delivers gentle electromagnetic pulses to the areas of the brain involved in mood, impulse control and habits. Our Miami clinic has all three BrainsWay coils: H1 for depression, H7 for OCD and H4 for smoking addiction, which makes us one of the few centers in Miami offering the complete Deep TMS program.

Treatment course: 20 sessions over 4 weeks (5 per week), followed by a continuation phase of 2 sessions per week for up to 8 more weeks.
Each session: about 20 minutes of stimulation. The pulses feel like mild tapping on the scalp.
Results: in a real-world analysis of more than 1,000 patients, nearly 3 in 4 who completed 30 sessions achieved a clinical response and nearly 1 in 2 achieved remission (Harvey SA et al., Brain Stimulation, 2020).
Deep TMS for OCD (H7 coil)

Preparation: a one-time 90-minute session to design personalized provocations based on your specific symptoms.
Treatment course: 29 sessions over 6 weeks. Each session takes about 30 minutes and combines a brief symptom provocation with an 18-minute Deep TMS protocol.
Results: in a pivotal placebo-controlled study, more than 1 in 3 patients responded, and in real clinical settings the majority saw their OCD symptoms decrease by at least 30% (Carmi L et al., Am J Psychiatry 2019; Roth Y et al., J Psychiatr Res 2020).
Deep TMS to quit smoking (H4 coil)
The first noninvasive brain stimulation technology FDA-cleared as an aid in short-term smoking cessation for adults (FDA 510(k) K200957). Designed for smokers who have tried medication, nicotine replacement or counseling without lasting success.

Treatment course: 18 sessions over 6 weeks: 5 per week for 3 weeks, then 1 per week for 3 weeks. Each session takes 25 to 30 minutes.
Three steps per session: a brief, personalized cue to activate craving; Deep TMS stimulation of the brain areas involved in addiction; and a short motivational counseling talk with the provider.
Results: in a large 14-center study of long-term heavy smokers who had failed previous quit attempts, 28% of those who completed treatment achieved four consecutive weeks without smoking, most of them still not smoking three months later, and the number of cigarettes per week fell by 75% on average.
What a session feels like
You sit in a comfortable chair, awake and alert, while the helmet-like coil rests on your head. The pulses feel like tapping on the scalp. There is no anesthesia and no recovery time: you can drive home and go back to work right after.
Side effects: the most common are mild headache or discomfort at the treatment site, which usually subside after the first few sessions. There is a very rare risk of seizure.
Who should not have Deep TMS: people with metal in or around the head (plates, implants, stents). Our psychiatrist reviews your medical history before starting.
