When the Street Is Not an Option: Addiction, Mental Health, and the Alliance Bringing Hope to Miami

MIAMI, August 2025 — Janet and Dayan were sleeping on the street. It was not something they ever imagined when they came to Miami looking for a new life. But addiction, a lack of support, and untreated trauma slowly pushed them to lose everything. For more than a year, they lived under the sun, the rain, and the judgment of a city that looked at them without seeing them. Until someone offered them something different: a chance to heal.

This is just one of the many stories that inspired Conducta Dade and Progressive Medical Center to join forces for a common cause: bringing mental health care, medical care, and human dignity to people living on the street, trapped in addiction and neglect.

The other side of Miami: streets full of pain

The numbers are clear, but cold: more than 3,800 homeless people in the county, many of them trapped in drug use and declining mental health. But behind every number there is a face. A name. A story that, many times, began with hope and ended in despair.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 25% of people experiencing homelessness live with serious mental illness, and up to 35% struggle with addiction. These figures are even worse in cities like Miami, where resources are limited and the vulnerable population keeps growing.

The street doesn’t just take away a roof. It takes away identity. Health. Hope. And for those living with mental health disorders or struggling with addiction, the street becomes a place where no one listens, no one cares for them, no one heals them.

Conducta Dade: listening before judging

In the face of this reality, Conducta Dade was born as a citizen movement that decided not to look away. Its mission is not just to hand out food or record videos. It is to build human connections with people who stopped trusting the system a long time ago. It is to listen, reach out a hand, and say, “You are not alone.”

With a constant presence in Miami’s neighborhoods, encampments, and streets, its team has become a real bridge between homelessness and the possibility of recovery. Its work has drawn the attention and collaboration of many community stakeholders, including Progressive Medical Center.

Progressive Medical Center: care that crosses the street

That is where Progressive Medical Center, a mental health clinic located in Kendall, came onto the scene. Guided by the vision of its founder, Yusmany Gil, the center decided to step out of the office and cross the street to bring clinical care to people who cannot make an appointment, fill out forms, or wait.

“Many of our patients don’t make it to the office because they have lost everything, even hope. That’s why we decided to go out and find them ourselves,” explains Yusmany Gil, founder of Progressive Medical Center.

Committed to defending mental health as a human right, Progressive Medical Center asked to join Conducta Dade’s project to contribute its clinical expertise and its professional team. For them, joining this cause was more than an option: it was a natural extension of their mission.

Psychiatrists, therapists, and specialized staff join the Conducta Dade team on weekly outreach visits, where they offer clinical evaluations, emotional support, medication management, and pathways to rehabilitation. Not from a distance. Not through bureaucracy. With compassion and presence.

Healing is possible: the power of an opportunity

Thanks to this alliance, Janet and Dayan are no longer on the street. They are in treatment. They have started a process that will not be easy, but one that began with someone who did not judge them, but instead looked them in the eye and told them: “We can help you.”

Cases like theirs are not isolated. Every week, people who had lost all hope begin a path toward healing, because someone reached out to them with respect and professionalism.

What comes next: growing to reach more people

Inspired by the impact of this collaboration, Progressive Medical Center and Conducta Dade are now looking to open their doors to more partners, institutions, and community members who want to join this cause. Community mental health care requires resources, yes, but above all, willingness and commitment.

In addition, Progressive Medical Center is preparing to open a new mental health clinic in Jacksonville, with the goal of replicating this model of compassionate, comprehensive care. This expansion aims to respond to the urgent needs of other communities in Florida, where homelessness and addiction also call for a humane, professional, and approachable response.

A lesson Miami must not forget

This alliance is more than a project. It is a human response to a silent crisis. At a time when headlines talk about laws that criminalize homelessness, or overdoses rising in the shadows, this story speaks of something else: empathy, action, and hope.

The street should not be anyone’s final destination. And as long as that keeps happening, someone will always need to be willing to see, listen, and act.

Anyone who wishes to support this cause or join the effort can contact Conducta Dade or Progressive Medical Center. Sometimes, the difference between living on the street and beginning to heal is a single outstretched hand.
